Ever came across such ad?

About a year ago, while looking around for a part time job, I came across a lot of these home typist and data entry jobs in the internet. I figured, it’s too good to be true. So I did a bit of experiment, with a cost of £9.95 (that’s about $20), to try and see how does this scheme work.

I first emailed this guy to get more information about the job. This was his reply:

A Data Entry Processor/Home Typist position requires that you have a reliable computer with constant Internet access and capabilities, a valid E-mail account, basic Internet knowledge, and minimal typing skills.

You must also be able to conduct yourself in a professional manner. This includes having excellent grammar and spelling when communicating with clients via E-mail.
In addition to the above requirements, you MUST be able to follow instructions closely and completely! You will do all contact via E-mail, so you will not be required to call anyone at anytime. This allows you to work whichever hours are most convenient for you (days, night, or weekends). You will be processing applications, as well as filling out forms in specific company databases (this tends to be tedious at times, so please be sure that you have the patience to do so before proceeding). This is why you will need to have basic Internet knowledge, though t! he training provided will give you step-by-step instructions on how to perform these tasks properly.

There are no down-times with this position, so you will have a constant flow of work to complete. THIS IS NOT A GET RICH QUICK SCHEME, so if that is what you are looking for please do not pursue this opportunity. You will be paid £25 for each application completed.
The amount of money you make each week is entirely up to you, and how much time and effort you are willing to put in with this position. The average person makes £300-£500 each week.
When you have been accepted as a Data Entry Clerk/Home Typist, you are considered an Independent Contractor.
This means that your taxes will not be taken out; therefore, you will not be provided with any tax forms. THIS IS ENTIRELY YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. The training provided will go more in depth about what to do with your taxes.

You will receive your pay through ! PayPal or whichever online payment portal you choose. When an ! applicat ion is completed, £25 will be credited to your PayPal account, which can be withdrawn into your bank account at your leisure.
You can read about the security policies at www.paypal.com.
There is a one-time non-refundable fee for the training package. This also includes all processing fees and training costs. We offer professional online support for as long as you may need us.
This is a one-time fee, and there will be no other charges to you. We must accept this fee to cover training costs, processing fees, as well as to ensure that only serious applicants apply. This is a non-refundable fee, so be sure that you understand what you are doing before sending in your payment for the training materials.
This fee will not be waived for anyone, and cannot be deducted from your first pay. This is because if you do not process applications, you will not have a first pay, and we will have already taken the time to set you up, and train you. Once your payme! nt is received, you will be sent a Training Pack via email, and you should be up and running in a few hours.

Most applicants typically complete the training within 24 hours or less. However, you can do this at your leisure.
Keep in mind that the sooner you go through the training materials, the sooner you will START earning money. I will be able to be contacted via E-mail at anytime after you have received your training materials to help you, or answer any questions you may have.
If you are serious about this position, meet all the requirements, and are responsible enough to work from home, then please contact me via E-mail and I will inform you of the cost of the training packet, and how to set up a PayPal account to send the fee (if you do not already have an account).
You seem like an excellent candidate for this position, and I hope that I hear from you again so I can get you STARTED right away!

The first thing I noticed was, there was no company name included in the mail. The only information available is the guy’s name and his email address. No phone number and no address whatsoever. Interesting enough.

I then agreed to continue applying for this ‘job’ and paid £9.95 for his ‘training pack and processing fee’. A few minutes later, an email came with the ‘training pack’ attachment.

It was an rtf file ($20 for that?!)

I’m not going to paste everything in this blog so here are some of the excerpts:

To get you started earning money TODAY; we have some simple steps for you to follow.

Your first steps are to place advertisements (classified and banner ads, traffic website exchange links, etc.) similar to the one you responded to.

The keyword here is PLACE ADS SIMILAR TO THE ONE YOU RESPONDED TO. Chain emails anyone?

You can receive applications and/or work histories and resumes via email. (See, once you place your ads, clients will find you for this work-at-home opportunity. You do not have to do any cold selling or recruiting!

Easy job eh? So where does home typist/data entry come into place?

REMEMBER: Typing Ads Online IS Typing and Entering Data Online and filling out the various classified ad site forms IS typing and filling out database forms.

This is exactly what was advertised and what you responded to. You see, there is no selling or recruiting. The ONLY thing that you will be doing is typing advertisements and filling out the forms to register, and then sending out email response letters to the applications that you will receive from interested clients.

Ah, now you’re making sense. Did you all get it? So what I’m supposed to do is typing ads to fool people into paying me for this rtf file

Samples of both the classified ad copy and the response letter copy are provided to you below. You will have to copy and paste these samples to your computer, so that you can send them to interested clients after they have responded to your initial ads.

The ad sample and response letter were exactly the same as the ones I quoted earlier, with a few words changed, particularly on the ‘training pack’ price.

And finally,

Finally if having read this you feel this is not going to work for you and you have wasted your time and money, please just give it a go.

It does work, I initially only started with one advert and I had received twelve responses within my first weekend. The key is to fill out the adverts and the money will follow!

Of course it’s gonna work for some people, but I find the idea of getting money from selling this ‘advice’ file is a bit overkill, and cheating in some way. So I won’t bother. Just not my style.

Technically, what this job does is:

So you’re effectively selling the rtf file, in a clever way I should say. Probably next step is to turn this rtf file into a pdf file and sell it as a PLR ebook you can find floating around the Net nowadays. Hmm, that might work.

I’m not saying that all home typist/data entry ads are scams, but for a general guideline, I think you should check out these points before paying whatever ‘admin fee’ they charge you:

Point number 1: Do they give you any contact number, company name or company address? If the only means of contact is email, this person can be anybody who just wants your money

Point number 2: How are you paying him? If you can only pay by Paypal, it’s also highly intriguing. Although most internet based companies accept Paypal, even the PLR ebook scam accepts Mastercards and Visas. So check that out

Point number 3: If you’re paying by Paypal, you can check when did he register with Paypal and check when did he verify his Paypal account. In my case, the guy just opened his Paypal account 2 weeks earlier. With no contact details (except his email), and the fact that I couldn’t reach him through phone, I was really risking my £9.95 for nothing (well, except to tell you all these stuff).

So be smart people! Spread this around and stop this scam from creeping into your life and your bank account

wow..is that true??? anyway, brilliant idea this scam. ho ho ho :D

It is true, and it is quite a brilliant idea. I think if the guy who started this chain email scam, start out an MLM company or pyramid scheme business, he would’ve made a fortune out of it. Luckily for us, we’re too smart to fall into his trap…or are we? ;-)

Is that company Typeinternational.com? I joined them last year, and lost $200 bucks applying that job and pasting 500 pathetic classified ads just for $20.

I emailed in complained, and i got a very rash reply.. Not only a few days later i realised that the company was a scam and that a domain check of the owner showed he owned both scamfreezone.com and typeinternational.com, so it was a disguise in scamfreezone to convince members its not a scam itself! Do take note of that.

Btw, thanks for sharing about the dangers of work at home jobs ahmad! I’ve linked up to your blog too!

I don’t think it’s the same company but there’s plenty of their kinds out there. There are others who are true to their words. Not all of them are scams. We just have to pick the right one and be extra careful, not easily influenced with all the hypes of working at home

Oh i see..yea, you’re right! There are a few trustworthy ones like edatajobs, which i’ve read up and researched on the forums..so the black sheep should not put us off from finding the good ones.

Thanks for your linkback!I really appreciate your kindness!

My friend was one of the victims too. And I decided to write a blog on this part time fraud stuff …. And hope more people will be aware of it.
She paid RM75 for an e-book. really not worth it. My blogspot is at http://dunbelieve.blogspot.com/ I wonder why people have the heart to cheat other people’s money. I know RM75 is not that much but it is still money , right?

I was looking for a job as typist from home via the internet. The offers online by various companies, looked promising and inviting, but I was still uncertain about few things they were telling me.
All my doubts were listed on the comments of the guys above, and I was not surprised of their warnings regarding this scum.
Do not be part of this online scum! You should not pay anyone for a job!
It’ s your right!

These are just stupid ways to fool people, and yet many people get fooled! If people were more analytical rather than believers, it would be great.

no problem John :)

RM75 can still buy you a roti canai everyday for a month. So that’s a lot too :D. Some people just want to steal your money without giving anything back to you. Avoid all those scammers

yeah, unfortunately, many would fall into their traps. They practically fool others to fool others to fool oth…and the list goes on. Hate these type of people.

The best thing is to find good reviews about certain companies that offer part time job at home. Not all of them are scammers. I’ve just reviewed one which unfortunately is a scam. If you’re serious about making money working at home, have a good research on different companies before wasting your money on worthless scheme.

I am a newbie to making money working from home. I would like to know if there is anyone that knows who the legitimate Companies are for making money typing at home and for newbies. I need something with full training. It’s fine if I have to pay for the training as long as it is complete training and support. I have been searching for almost a year and have already spent more money than I care to admit, trying to find work from home jobs. If there is anyone who can give me some insight on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

There are a lot of “work at home” scams out there, and the typing/data entry scam has been used by a lot of dishonest companies. This gives a bad name to the home business industry, but people should know there are many honest ways to make money online. Always research every opportunity you are considering.
