How Long Does It Take to Write A Blog Post?

What’s the average time you take to write a blog post?

For me, it takes me usually more than 2 hours for a blog post. Yeah, it’s a bit longer than I expected, or planned most of the time. One reason being, I tend to write long articles to convey my message, although I know most of them could’ve been shorter and straight to the point. Probably that’s just my style of writing. Well, at least Steve Pavlina writes much longer articles than mine

I’ve seen a lot of other bloggers who write more than 1 blog post per day. And one reason they can do that is because they write short articles which normally ranging from 100-300 words per post. That’s something I’ve been trying to do since day one but I’m still struggling. The article in copyblogger about when to stop writing really makes me think on cutting down the words in my blog posts.

The bad thing about writing long articles is like I said earlier, it consumes too much time for just 1 post. I think it’s generally okay if you spend that amount of time once a week, or if you have nothing to do except blogging. But being a father of two active children, and a PhD student at the same time, I don’t think more than 2 hours on 1 blog post is good enough, as far as time management is concerned.

Another bad thing is, if the blog post is long, I can only post at most 1 article per day because of my time constraint. Since this blog is just beginning to get to its one month mark, first impression counts. If I somehow get extra busy for just 1 day and no articles posted on that day, I can immediately see the result. Yup you guessed it right. Major drop in traffic and the number of subscribers.

If most of you don’t mind with me publishing only 1 article per day, problem solved then :-) . But since some audience like it short, and some like it long, it’s best if I can get a general view of the situation.

What do you think? Do you prefer short articles or the long ones? Feedbacks from all of you are very much appreciated :-)

I find that subscribers do not mind long articles if the posts have quality, value and substance then they get lost in the moment and length does not matter. Of course you will always have someone who complains about the length, yet you can never satisfy everyone especially if you have many subscribers.

My advice based on my experience is give your subscribers high quality blogs in creative nature and originality, that way you do not have to worry about the length, time to write it or how many blogs you are doing. Just keep your focus on helping and being a service to the people reading it and you can not go wrong :)

I usually spend between 2-6 hours on an article and that includes reviewing, formating, checking links or images etc.
I’m aiming that one post doesn’t have more than 1000 words, usually is around 500, but it depends on the topic i’m writing about. I really don’t think that people want long or short posts; they want interesting articles.

Short!!! Haha I duno sometimes even I find I have a short attention span when reading other peoples posts but thats just me. Personally I even will take the time to read an article if it’s really short just for the sense of accomplishment. Keep up the good work you really do write exellent articles! :)

hmm, i don’t mind reading a long article if it is interesting enough to keep me reading attentively, but not too long please. you might want to put them in series like the ones u wrote about getting more ad clicks if u have a lot to say about it. saves time and more posts on just one topic but don’t drag things to eternity :). at the moment, i think u’re doing fine - me myself am struggling to keep my writings not too long huhu some ppl even complained that my poems are too long though those long ones are fairly popular than the shorter ones at times :d

Thanks all for your comments :). I guess great contents make people stick to your blog post, regardless of its length. Hopefully all of you are having great time reading my posts so far :)

Sometimes it can take me upwards of 2 hours to post a blog. I find that I spend too much time researching, writing and re-writing to accomplish what I want to say.

Lately, I’ve been working on making shorter posts, But also trusting that what I’m saying is good the first time through because it generally ends up being very close to that anyway. I think this comes with experience and learning what your readers want.

I try to get in the “zone” and pre-write several articles at one time too.

You do post good stuff, keep it up!

Cheers,
Heather

Yeah, I spend a lot on reading stuff on the web. Probably I should balance out between reading and writing, otherwise I could end up not writing anything at all. Thanks for your advice Heather :)

It can take a lot of time blogging. It is fun to write and be creative.

What normally takes me so long is to come up with the idea for a post. Once I have the idea, the article itself just flows out and I can normally finish it within 10 minutes or so. My problem is, and hopefully everyone has this problem, when I’m writting and I go back to read it. The idea might have been great in my head, but on the screen its horrible. When this happens, I get rid of it and go back to scratch for a different topic.
