How StumbleUpon Hugely Increase My Traffic
It was a great day for a little-bit-more-than-one-week blog that I have here. It taught me how social bookmarking and social networking sites can greatly affect your traffic. Now I’m telling you this not with the intention of showing off since there’s nothing to show off in the first place. The term ‘hugely increase’ to me is probably a small spike to others but considering this blog was born less than 2 weeks ago, I can consider the traffic surge as huge. I’m telling this bit of information just to prove what I read and what other senior bloggers out there have been advising us to do to boost the traffic to our blogs.
I guess it’s best if I show you this Alexa graph first before starting my story.
As you can see, there is a significant increase of traffic on June 2nd. From my MyBlogLog account, the traffic registered coming from Stumbleupon was 703 on that day, all going to this post while the total number of visitors going to the same post was 753. I don’t know how accurate Mybloglog tracker is but I think it’s pretty close to accurate. The plugin WP-PostViews that I installed on that post showing around 1500 before I went to sleep that night. So I think the number from Mybloglog can be used here, although I don’t quite understand why the number that I got from Google Analysis is just around 20-30 visitors. Oh well, I think Alexa graph tells the whole story. (If anybody knows why the numbers are different for different trackers, please leave your comments)I logged in to my Stumbleupon account to check where did it start. I remembered submitting my own blog address there (it’s not a good move probably) but I didn’t think those stumblers coming from that particular link. I then found out that Andy Beard (all credits to him) had bookmarked my post on ‘How to Make $5 from AdSense in 1 Year‘, from which I strongly believe has lead to this insurgent of traffic. Thanks Andy and all the people in Stumbleupon who voted for that post.This is such a valuable lesson to me, and should be to all of those who just started blogging as well. What I learnt was, this social bookmarking and networking trend is huge. With just a few thumbs up, I got a massive increase of 700 visitors in a day. Imagine for a well established blogger, how much traffic he can get if everybody in his/her network voted for him/her.The key to this technique are,
- Don’t submit your own post unless you’ve got a massive network of fans behind you. It won’t work that way.
- Have someone with a reputation as a senior or the A-list blogger vote for your post because I think people will trust their recommendations more than the blog owner’s recommendation of his/her own blog :). You will then see the number starts increasing every hour. It’s such a great feeling.
- Unique contents of your post.
- The title must have some sort of punch in it as a bait to attract more and more people to your blog
Although it’s just a one day spike in the graph, one day exposure of your blog is better than no exposure at all. People will at least look at your blog and who knows they might be coming again. Then your next job is to maintain quality contents every single day to build your credibility and gain their trust. Don’t let the mood down by following up with a crap article. Give them what they need, possibly materials of the same type that attracted them to your blog in the first place.
So what are you waiting for? Get your brain running and start posting. Don’t forget, social bookmarking and networking sites are your marketplace. Use them a lot.

I think you probably need to expand your network, make yourself more visible in the community, stumble a lot, have some friends with large network stumble your post, socialize more and make friends with people. Don’t forget to post quality contents as well. That’s the most important thing.
