c. Pick a topic that can be talked about for years.

Again, to maintain your consistency in giving out quality contents, you’ve got to pick a topic that you can talk about it all day for years. You’ve got to have a long term plan. The topic has got to be something that’s evolving everyday, or something that’s continuously updated. For one-off topics, you’d better off building a website. A website is more suitable for some topics that can be talked about for one day, and that’s about it. There’s nothing more to it. Since a blog is built up in such a chronological way, you can’t pick something static. It will become exhausted one day, and your blog will just die out and disperse to the land of nowhere.

Taking my list again for example, if I want to blog about basketball, I can probably write about the drills, techniques and news. That’s it. In my opinion, I can’t see my future blogging about basketball. To me, it’s just going to be a short term relationship. It would be better if I set up a website that puts together the news, tips, techniques, drills and everything related to basketball and leave it like that

On the other hand, if I want to talk about video games, I could go on forever since the video games industry is expanding each and every day. There will always be new technology introduced and there will always be new games developed. I can talk about cheat codes, tips, tricks, reviews, FAQ and walkthroughs everytime a new game comes out in the market. It’s something that ‘lives’ forever until the end of mankind. So, according to my rule, this topic is perfectly suitable to be used in my blog (if I decided to blog about it)

d. High demand low supply

Pick a topic that most people search for in search engines, but only a small number of blogs or websites that discuss it or provide information about it. You have to use your brain a bit here to balance out between high demand and low supply. Chances are, there are already a lot of websites and blogs written to supply those popular topics.

You might ask, how do I know what topics get the most search?

My suggestion is, for free tools, use SEO Book Keyword Selection Tool or Overture Keyword Selector Tool. Type in your keywords from the list of interests that you have written down and jot down the number of monthly search volume for every keyword. I did a search on ‘digital photography’ and this is the result that I got
dgphotoseo2.jpgApart from the monthly search volume, you should also take note on the length of the list produced from the search which reflects the depth of the topic. This will be useful for your niche targeting. Sometimes, it’s probably a good idea to pick a topic that gets less search volume (i.e further down the result list), in this case the keyword ‘digital photography book’ might be a good choice, to reduce the number of competition for the top position in Search Engine Result Page (SERP), as well as the competition to be the best ‘supplier’ out there. You can then estimate the number of websites and blogs that talk about those particular topics by simply type in the keywords in Google search and look at the number of hits it produced. The lower the number the better, as it means less blogs and websites exist to supply the needs.

e. High paying keywords

Go back to your list of interests and use these tools to estimate the profitability of each of them.

Google Adwords Traffic Estimator

Google Adwords Keyword Tool

To ensure maximum profitability, you would want to concentrate on getting ads with high paying keywords displayed on your blog. The numbers produced by these tools don’t really mean that you’re going to get the exact same amount shown. It’s just a measure of how much money an advertiser is willing to pay for the ads. You are probably going to get less than that for every click. But nevertheless, it gives you some idea on which keywords are more profitable to pick than others.

Going back to our example, if I type ‘digital photography’ for the traffic estimator and the keyword tool, I’m going to get something like this:

dgphototraffic.jpgdgphotokeyword.jpgFrom the result, you can see that digital photography keyword is estimated to get around $2-$3 of average CPC. That’s a pretty good number I should say. And from the keyword digital photography, you can narrow down your option to truly target a specific niche, and still get high paying keywords such as digital photography training and digital photography courses. The keyword ‘digital photography review’ on the other hand, might not generate as much profit as the others, as you can see from its relatively lower average CPC. So you see, these two tools of keyword estimator are very useful to get you the idea of how profitable a keyword is, and to help you in deciding the niche that should go for.To be continued in part 3..
