Section 3 : Tweak Your Ads
Tweaking your ads involves finding the optimum ads placement, ads design, section targeting and so on. There are a lot of articles giving tips on this topic but one that I find very useful is the post in SmashingMagazine about Google Adsense: Facts, FAQs and Tools. It contains all the Adsense articles and tips that so many great bloggers have written about.
My favourites are :
1) Experiment
Try different ads size and placement on your blog. What works for others might not work for you. If you’ve got quite a steady traffic, give 1 or 2 weeks experimenting what’s the best position to use for you ads. Use Adsense channels to monitor individual ads.
2) More doesn’t always mean more
Putting more ads on one page doesn’t always mean that you can earn more. If about 50% of the page is full of ads, that might turn people away from your site. Don’t make it looks cluttered. Keep it tidy and reasonable.
3) Ads blending
Andreas Moser at Linkrain has done several experiments on ads design and concluded that blended ads are giving the most revenue and are used by most big websites. I personally prefer blended ads as well, and if you look at most books on adsense, they will all recommend you to blend your ads with your blog theme colors. As most gurus would say, ‘Blend your ads so that they don’t look like ads’.
4) Section Targetting
Use section targetting for more relevant ads. You don’t want public service announcement ads appear on your niche blog just because Google bots not being clever enough to find relevant keywords on your site. So give the bots some hints, do section targetting
5) Experiment more
All the tips and tricks are just general guidelines. You yourself have to track the performance of your ads and find out what’s best for your sites. And for that, experiment as needed and be prepared to change your ads settings.
