Make Extra Money With High Traffic Or Highly Targeted Traffic?

There’s a huge debate over this topic whether bloggers should concentrate on getting just pure traffic no matter where it comes from, or should they concentrate on getting targetted traffic?

We might think that any traffic will do, and I think every blogger enjoys getting some occassional peaks in their traffic every now and then. But it all boils down to your objectives in getting traffic

  1. Do you just want some exposure?
  2. Do you want to make money from the traffic?
  3. Are you planning to convert those visitors into loyal subscribers?
  4. Do you want to get high traffic for a short term period or long term?

Perhaps, if you can answer these questions, it will become clearer to you whether you want targetted traffic or just any kinds of traffic.

In my opinion, if you want to make money online, it’s more profitable to concentrate on getting highly targetted traffic i.e traffic from search engines targetting your long tail keywords. Why? Because they come to your website on purpose, and hopefully, what you’re providing serves their needs and they’ll come again should they want to look for that info again. In other words, if you’re planning to convert a visitor to a loyal subscriber, and aiming for a long term effect, go for highly targetted traffic

If you just want to make yourself known in the community and not really into making money blogging, then you can just do whatever it takes to drive people to your site. You can self promote your blog on various social networking and social bookmarking sites, create blog posts about the latest hype and buzz (like iPhone, DC Madam List, Cloverfield or whatever people are talking about at that moment) or some other white hat or black hat techniques. As long as you get the traffic, be it for just one day, you’ll be happy enough.

I don’t think an increase in traffic for 1 or 2 days will be enough for you to get more clicks on your ads. Planning to get just traffic, without concentrating on highly targetted traffic is just playing with luck. You’re just hoping that from all those high traffic somebody might just decided to subscribe to your site. That’s it, just hoping. That strategy is like, not a strategy at all.

Get Traffic and Convert Visitors into Loyal Readers

A better strategy would be to get both types of traffic AND convert those that come via referral websites (social bookmark, social networks etc) into your loyal readers (coz normally they just stay for several seconds before going off to other sites). If it goes well, you’ll get more than just a peak in your graph. But on average, you’ll get higher traffic everyday from those conversions. It will become more profitable as well since you’ll get higher chances of people clicking your ads or buying your affiliate products if you get high traffic everyday from your loyal readers and not just for one or two days only.

Converting a normal visitor into a loyal reader is not an easy job. It’s an art that very few have mastered. From what I see, I think the best method to attract people is to provide useful contents to them. Make their visits worthwhile. First impression counts so providing something useful everyday will make sure that people who come unintentionally will intentionally return for more. So be nice and helpful to people, and they will remember your site as the one to visit everyday.
